The first full weekend in August is always a hot time in Oregon’s coolest small town, Historic Silverton. And this year will be no different! Silverton’s Annual Homer Davenport Community Festival boasts an impressive line-up of family-friendly small-town activities.
And of course we will host all the usual activities and actions one would expect from a Community Festival. Ours is a “Festival of Festivals”: a common time of the year when all of Silverton’s organizations, service clubs, associations and individuals to come together and show their meddle.
A typical Homer weekend might start bright and early with the Lions Club Harvest Breakfast, a tradition that predates the Homer Festival by decades. Next on tap is Homer’s Parade, starting at the old High School campus, it snakes through town with a vast variety of local floats, old cars, the High School marching band, Arabian and other horses. The Silverton Fly Wheels Car Club also will feature its annual Classic Car Cruise-In.
The next day see the annual “Davenport Races,” where a variety of home furnishings are fitted for wheeled racing, down Main Street. Or if you are a Biker, ride the Third Annual Poker Run throughout the Waldo Hills, ending up in Silverton, as a benefit for our after-school kids program.
As for the man himself, the Silverton Country Historical Society will host a special exhibition of original Davenport cartoons, in both their's and the City's collections. These full-sized original examples of Davenport’s work will be on display in the Council Chambers of the Community Center all three days of the Davenport Community Festival.
And all three days starting on Friday, Silverton’s Coolidge-McClaine City Park under the trees plays host to the annual crafts fair, food court and music stage. The Homer Davenport Community Festival is managed by the Silverton Rotary Club as well as numerous other groups and individuals. Check us out!
